Animal Theft
A Reality Not to Be Ignored
Animal trafficking is the 3rd largest illegal trade in the world after drugs and weapons.
For several years, we have seen an increase in dog and cat thefts. Purebred animals are not the only targets: mixed breeds and alley cats are also targets for organized networks.
Why Do They Steal Our Pets?
Understanding traffickers' motivations to better protect yourself.
Illegal Breeding
Purebred or 'type' dogs are stolen to supply clandestine breeding farms (puppy mills).
Laboratories
Illegal supply for animal testing (lack of traceability).
Fur Trade
Some skins (especially cats) are exported for use in the textile industry.
Fighting & Baiting
Using stolen dogs as 'bait' for dog fighting training.
Ransom
Opportunistic theft followed by a demand for money from distraught owners.
Golden Rules of Vigilance
- NEVER leave your animal alone
- Neither in your garden unsupervised, nor in your car (even for a few minutes).
- Nor tied up in front of a store while shopping.
- Beware of scouting: people going door-to-door may actually be scouting for animals.
Victim of Theft? Act Now!
File a complaint immediately (Gendarmerie/Police Station). Insist on filing a complaint for theft, not just a daybook entry.
